Bury St Edmunds has been a centre of entertainment and the arts for centuries. Today,
many outstanding public buildings host events and performances throughout the
year. The Theatre Royal, a superb restored Georgian building (the first purpose built
playhouse of its kind in England), features opera, dance and music as well as drama from
the best touring companies. Bury St Edmund's Art Gallery has exhibitions of
contemporary arts and crafts of the highest quality.
As well as holding its own annual community arts festival,
Haverhill boasts the Town Hall Arts Centre, a magnificent
Victorian hall, which promotes a wide range of
entertainment and cinema.
The highlight of the artistic calendar is the annual 17 day Bury St Edmunds
Festival, held in May, which offers music and entertainment to suit all
tastes. It includes exhibitions, talks, walks, films, dance, opera,
theatre, comedy and much more . Call the Festival booking office from March

At one time this part of Suffolk boasted more pubs than
churches. The number has dwindled over the years but there
is still a wealth of pubs, coaching inns and hostelries to
choose from, including the Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds
reputed to be the smallest pub in England.
Because of the abundance of fertile farmland in the region,
you can be almost certain that the food on your plate will
be fresh and locally produced. The same may be true of
the beer in your glass. The mighty Greene King brewery in
Bury St Edmunds produces some of the best beer for some
of the best pubs in England! At the other end of the size
scale, little Nethergate's brewery in Clare brews fine, ales
for a loyal local following. There are also vineyards that offer
tastings of the excellent wines that they produce.
On top of all this, there are the restaurants, snack
bars, bistros, cafes and hotels offering food that
varies from traditional Suffolk fayre to more
exotic dishes from all over the world.
If you can be sure of one thing, it is that you will be
spoilt for choice in St Edmundsbury.
